According to the ministry’s spokesperson, Tope Adeleye Elias-Fatile, the ministry has received a reliable report from the Nigerian Mission in Rome ascertaining that bodies of 26 teenage Nigerians, all of whom are girls, were discovered in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
The remains of the migrants who were between the ages of fourteen and eighteen were brought to Southern Italian Port of Salerno by a Spanish Warship, Cantabria, Adeleye stated.
According to him, “The Italian security officials who made this discovery are yet to confirm if they were murdered, tortured or sexually assaulted and why all who died were female.”
“Indeed, this is a monumental loss and a sad moment to our country.
As more investigations are being conducted on the unfortunate incident, the Federal Government wishes to commiserate with the family members of the victims.”
